This cake is the perfect addition to a Halloween party for kids or adults, the block party or even a class party! Or heck, just make it for fun for your own family! I know the fall is a busy time of year, especially as we inch towards the craziness of the holiday season, so I know you’ll love something that’s relatively easy and simple to create! Let me walk you through the steps to put together this spooky masterpiece!
You’ll begin by baking your cake. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there’s no shame in using a box cake! By all means, if you have a favorite from-scratch cake recipe, feel free to bake away. But if you don’t or you’re pressed for time, it’s 100% okay to bake one from a box! I went with two boxes of my favorite dark chocolate cake mix. You’ll mix the batter and divide it evenly into 3 round cake pans. Bake them, let them cool and then place one of the cakes onto your cake board or cake stand and use a cake leveler to remove the dome from the cake so you have a nice even layer for your base.
You’ll repeat the same process, leveling the other two layers as well. Next, you’ll mix up your frosting. Recipe details and instructions are below, but you’ll need three different colors: lime green, orange and purple. I used AmeriColor Electric Green, Electric Purple, and Electric Orange gel food coloring to get the bright vibrant colors I was after.
Once you’ve mixed your colors, scoop each color into its own piping bag and cut the tips off your piping bags. Begin with the green frosting and pipe a thick ring of frosting round the outer edge of the top of the first layer of cake.
Next, you’ll pipe a thick ring of purple frosting on the inside of the green ring, followed by a thick ring of orange frosting on the inside of the purple ring.
You’ll repeat this pattern until you can’t pipe any more rings into the middle. Next, place the second layer of leveled cake onto the frosting. Repeat the same pattern of frosting, moving from the outside edge to the inside. Finally, you’ll place the third layer of leveled cake onto the second layer of frosting.
Now it’s time to decorate! Using about 1 3/4 C of the green frosting, cover and frost the entire cake. Next, mix up all of your Halloween sprinkles in a large bowl and then coat the entire cake with the fun mix!
Choosing a mix of Halloween sprinkles is one of the best parts of this project! Depending on who you’re making the cake for, you might make some different choices, but here’s the mix of sprinkles we went with:
- 1 container of Halloween Sweets Indeed Sprinkles Mix
- 1 package of Wilton Spooky Red Eyeball Candies (I also like their Red Vein Eyeballs)
- 1 container of Bloody Bones Sprinkles
For the finishing touches, use the leftover green and white frosting, scooping the green frosting onto one side of a fresh piping bag and the white frosting onto the other side, so you have both colors in the bag. Then pipe dollops of frosting onto the top of the cake, going around in a circle. Lastly, I used Wilton Green Sparkle Gel to pipe oozy drips onto the top of the frosting dollops.
Have fun with your decorations and get creative! Whatever you come up with will be perfectly beautiful and utterly delicious! Make sure you place your cake into the refrigerator once you’re done decorating it. This will allow the frosting to set, especially on the inside of the cake, before you cut it into slices, revealing the colorful Halloween layers hiding inside!
Good luck, have fun, enjoy and Happy Halloween! Be sure to Pin this post for later party planning!
